Thad Williamson's - the best and biggest on the web!

Thirty Good Years With Manchester City, Southend United, Clevedon Town, and the England National Team.
The following account is both a record of my 30 seasons as a manager in England on CM3 01/02, stretching from July 2001 to June 2031, and an implicit warning to all those who are just picking up the game as to how addictive it can become. The following record is of a single game, starting from the CM3 01/02 demo released in Sept. 2001 and played over the next six months, with no cheating or saved game shenanigans. Feeling that I have accomplished all I can in this version of the game, I am erasing the game from my hard drive and my wife is taking custody of the disk and will relocate it outside the house. Lest you think I'm completely crazy, note that the last 15 or so seasons were played with all the matches set on "very fast," with the exception of the second half of cup finals or season-ending league matches. That makes it possible to play through a year in about 8 hours.
My career had five major components, outlined below. I then provide a brief season by season recap of all 30 years.

Career summary:
Component One: Manager of Manchester City, July 2001 to October 2013.
Major accomplishments: Promotion from First Division as Champions. 4 Premiership titles; 3 FA Cup titles, 3 League Cup titles, 2 Champions Cup titles, one UEFA Cup title, 3 European Super Cup titles, 2 Intercontinental Cup titles, 3 Charity Shield Titles. 8 consecutive years qualifying for Champions League. Premiership/FA Cup/Champions League treble in 2011.
Resigned in October 2013 after a clash with board over a transfer buy and to pursue a new challenge.
Component Two: Manager of Southend United, April 2014 to July 2021.
Assumed team as it sat 23rd in the Third Division, just 2 points above relegation zone. Guided team to safety in 2014, then three consecutive promotions. Entered Premiership in 2017-2018. Won FA Cup in 2019. Qualified for UEFA Cup four consecutive seasons. Qualified for Champions League group play in 2021-22 by finishing 3rd in 2020-2021.
Component Three: International Management, 2006-2030.
Coached Portugal in Euro 2008 and Mexico in 2010 World Cup.
Served as England manager, 2010-2026. Won Euro 2012 and Euro 2020, and World Cup in 2018 and 2022. Lost in final of Euro 2024. Reached World Cup semifinal in 2026. Resigned in good standing in 2026 to concentrate on managing Clevedon Town.. Qualified for every major tournament during this period; reached quarterfinal or better in every tournament save one (World Cup 2014, narrowly avoiding the sack!)
Served as Ireland Manager, 2028-2030. Qualified for World Cup 2030. Failed to qualify for second round (1-1-1 record in first round.) Retired from International Management.
Component Four: Return to Maine Road (City of Manchester Stadium), July 2021 to July 2026.
Won five consecutive Premiership titles. Won Champions Cup twice, FA Cup twice, League Cup once, Super Cup twice, Intercontinental Cup once, Charity Shield four times. League cup/Premiership/Champions League treble in 2026. Lost just two league games in both 2023-2024 and 2025-2026. After re-signing almost the entire, star-studded first team squad to new contracts and with about million in City's coffers, resigned in July 2026 to pursue a new challenge.
Component Five: Clevedon Town, July 2026 to July 2031.
Hired as Clevedon Town manager in July 2026, newly promoted to Conference. Town had stadium with capacity of 6000, (600 seated) upon my arrival. Led Town to four consecutive promotions, three times going up as league champions. Set record for team points in the Conference in July 2027. Lost in 2028 League Cup final as a 3rd Division side in Town's first-ever appearance in the competition. Won 2031 FA Cup. Qualified for Champions League football in 2031/32 by finishing 4th. Having taken a non-league side to Champions League football and secured its financial future, including million in the bank and a new 15,000 capacity all-seater stadium, retired from football management in July 2031.

Summary of basic tactical philosophy:
Throughout my career, I employed a 3-1-3-1-2 formation about 95% of the time: three central defenders, a defensive central midfielder, two wingers, a central midfielder and an attack central midfielder (withdrawn forward), plus two strikers. Wingers were instructed to play crosses in, the three central midfielders all instructed to play through balls. All five midfielders were usually instructed to run at defenders and attempt long shots. For marking, the two outside central defenders were given man-marking responsibilities with the center central defenders playing zonal marking. All the midfielders were given marking responsibilities, generally zonal. The strikers did no marking.
In the last 15-20 minutes of matches when behind or in games where a draw was unacceptable, or where the opponent was down to 10 men, I often brought on a third striker in place of the defensive midfielder to pile on the pressure. Certain players who were otherwise unremarkable had a knack for late strikes and I kept this in mind.
In any case I tried to sub in a fresh striker and/or winger for the last 20-30 minutes of matches more often than not. Other players were subbed in the case of yellow cards, fatigue falling to 75% or so, or poor performances (a "5" rating after an hour almost always brought the hook, and sometimes a "6" if the rest of the side were playing well.) Late in my career I became more aggressive about substituting goalkeepers, especially in cup ties, if they let in a couple and were at fault.
I almost always instructed players to press and to play offside trap. About 90% of the time I had an attacking orientation as the default with adjustments depending on match developments. With Manchester City and England I played a short passing game; at Southend and Clevedon Town I played direct. At Southend and Clevedon I generally instructed players to make hard tackles (generating league fines about three times).
Summary statistics:
16 leagues won
35 cups won
78 awards won
1848 games played
1127 games won
377 games drawn
344 games lost
3110 goals scored
1484 goals conceded
328 players bought--total value ,000,000 (I used U.S. dollars)
205 players sold--total value ,000,000
